Response Percentage
          No 9%

The reasons why you think it is a good place to study:

  • 22 respondents said the University Centre LRC is a good place to study because it is quiet.
  • 7 people commented that the space is calm, relaxing and peaceful.
  • 16 think the environment makes it a good place to study, for example "Its a quiet, modern, safe place to work with full access to computers, chargers and plenty of books. It has a lovely atmosphere."
  • 23 said it was due to the resources that are available - "Lots of resources available to help with assignments and exams. Quiet and friendly area, staff always willing to help and will always aim to find or request any books you are trying to find or fetch from Derby Road."
  • 7 like it because of access to computers and laptops.
  • 15 students appreciate the support provided by LRC staff, e.g. "Excellent staff always willing to help"; "Staff always able to help if needed and even if they do not know the answer, always willing to find out. Very knowledgeable"; "All staff are very helpful."

The reasons why you think it is not a good place to study:

  • 1 respondent said the University Centre LRC was not a good place to study because it is too noisy - "Would like more areas to study and it can sometimes be a bit too loud."
  • Others said it was a good place to study but the noise at break times is a problem - "Environment is peaceful, predominantly quiet excluding break times" and "During quiet periods the LRC is a good place to study, however, during the dinner break it is sometimes hard to focus if there are loud groups. I know the LRC staff often remind people to be quiet in the LRC, but the noise from groups having conversations does travel to the LRC and can be quite a distraction."

We always try our best to keep the noise in the LRC to an appropriate level in order to maintain a balance that meets the needs of students who are working in small groups and individuals who need a quiet space to concentrate on their work. Unfortunately the layout of the building with the eating area joined to the LRC and the space being open plan encourages the noise to travel making it difficult to control. You are able to book the study rooms on the first floor if you are struggling with the noise coming from the eating area or the reception area downstairs. If you would like complete silence there is the silent study room in the Derby Road LRC - simply ask at the help desk to be booked in.

8. Are the opening times appropriate for when you want to use the LRC?

Column chart showing results to the question are the opening times appropriate for when you want to use the LRC?

Response Percentage
          Not at all appropriate 0%
          Not particularly appropriate 0%
          Quite appropriate 22%
          Very appropriate 78%
          Total 100%

Overall 100% of respondents thought the opening times are very or quite appropriate, but these were a few suggestions:

  • If the LRC in the University Centre was open slightly earlier, such as 08:00am, it would be more ideal, but the College's LRC is open at this time so it's alright.
  • Just extend on a Friday.
  • Having the opportunity to use the centre at the weekend would be helpful.
  • I just feel that the university centre should see other universities as competition and be doing all they can to compete, library opening times at other universities are more flexible for opening hours even being unmanned at times but still secure.

9. Can you usually get a PC in the LRC when you need one?

Column chart showing results to the question can you usually get a PC in the LRC when you need one?

11. What do you value most about your LRC?

These were by far the things you most valued about the LRC:

  • The range of resources available
  • Help / support from staff
  • The learning / study environment
  • Access to computers

12. Tell us one thing the LRC could do better, or one other service it could offer which you would find helpful.

Could do better / could offer No. of comments LRC response
More / better computers and laptops.  4

The laptops in the laptop lockers are for individual independent study, but unfortunately we regularly see entire classes being sent for them. If laptops are required for class there is a laptop trolley available for class use which your tutor should book out for that lesson so that the LRC ones can be used for their intended purpose.

If computers or laptops are running slowly / not working properly please inform a member of staff so that the problem can be resolved quickly.

More books / e-books for nursing, social work, health and social care, teacher training, business and law, sociology, psychology, sciences, social science. 22

Our Learning Resource Advisors work closely with teaching staff to ensure that all resources required by students are available in the LRC. The Advisors will look at the requests that have been made and consult with the relevant tutors. We try to meet demand by purchasing multiple copies of books where necessary but we cannot afford to buy one copy per person so to help you gain access to the books you need we have a request system which allows you to reserve items that are on loan – please ask at the help desk to access this service.

Where titles are in demand we also look to see if an e-book version is available. However not all print books are published as e-books and so this is not always possible. Our e-book collection is continually growing as more titles become available in this format.

Provide more quiet spaces. 1

If you are finding it difficult to concentrate in the LRC you can book into one of the study rooms on the first floor.

If you would like complete silence there is the silent study room in the Derby Road LRC - simply ask at the help desk to be booked in.

It is sometimes difficult to control the noise due to being located next to the eating area and the noise also travelling from the reception area downstairs but we will continue to monitor the noise and remind people to keep the noise down in order to encourage an appropriate working atmosphere.

More study tables / with sockets. 3

We have tried our best in terms of the layout in the LRC but where most of the tables are placed is dictated by the floor power sockets so we are unable to move them to create space for additional tables with or without power sockets.

Open later on Friday / at weekends. 3

Overall 100% of respondents think the opening times are very or quite appropriate for when they want to use it.

Opening times will be changing from next year including an increase in the hours the LRC is staffed.

Open doors to outside terrace. 1 We will investigate why the doors have not been open.
Increase loan entitlement limit. 1

We have to carefully balance the number of items you can borrow with the demand for the resources. We receive feedback that there are not enough resources and this would only get worse if the the loan entitlement limit was increased.

Quite often students will try to borrow every item on a reading list when this isn't always necessary. It might be that you only require a couple of pages or a chapter from a book and so scanning those pages would be a better option than borrowing the book.

Printer faults / help with using the MFD. 2

Always report faults to a member of staff so they can guide you towards the other available printers and to ensure it is fixed quickly.

Staff are available to help with using the MFDs, but a tutorial is not usually provided during induction as there is a poster by every MFD with instructions on how to copy, scan and print.

Tell us anything else about your LRC

An overwhelming number of positive comments were received in response to this final survey question. Here's just a few of them:

All fabulous.

Fantastic place to study.

Good area to study/revise/ work in. Any help that is required is easily accessible. Member of staff in the LRC is always helpful.

Helps with all exams and assignments. Would be lost without the LRC as most libraries locally do not have the books and resources needed to help me.

I don't know how I would study without it.

It's a lovely environment to be in.

Love it!

Please reward the staff.

Staff always willing to help.

Staff are lovely and very helpful.

The staff are wonderful and do their best to help you. No job is too much for them and they are all very approachable and do their best to assist.

The staff in the library are so helpful. I don't know what I would do without them. They are always very knowledgeable on the book stock and really seem to know everything!

This is one of the best LRC's I've used. There are plenty of resources for everyone and the staff are very helpful.

Very helpful.

Whoever was responsible for hiring the staff did an amazing job.
